Scripture: Luke 21:5–6 (NRSV) — “As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another.”
Reflection:
We all recognize that feeling when our trusted things no longer hold true. Jesus honestly acknowledges this experience. He doesn’t pretend that faith will shield us from disruption; instead, he teaches us how to navigate it without losing ourselves. His words remind us that the temple, beautiful, familiar, and sacred, would not be what ultimately sustains them. God’s presence would.
Sometimes the stones shift in our lives: routines change, relationships evolve, churches adapt, and plans unravel. Instead of promising escape, Jesus promises companionship. In a world where so much feels temporary, Jesus centers us on what is eternal: God’s love, God’s presence, and God’s commitment to walk with us through every tremor we feel.
When we let go of the illusion of permanence, we create space for God’s unexpected future to unfold. It’s not that the changes stop hurting; it’s that they no longer have the final say.
Application:
Name one place in your life where “the stones are shifting.” Offer it to God without trying to fix or figure it out.
Writing Prompt:
Where have you seen God show up during times of instability before?
Prayer:
Steady God, hold me when the ground beneath me feels uncertain. Help me trust that your presence will carry me through every change. Amen.
