Scripture: Matthew 1:18–25 (NRSV)
Key Verse: “Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife.” (Matthew 1:20b)
Reflection:
Fear often compels us to step back—to protect ourselves, to wait for certainty, or to avoid risk. Joseph had every reason to do just that. His world had shifted suddenly, with no clear explanation, and the social consequences of staying with Mary were real and costly. Fear could have justified walking away.
Instead, Joseph encounters a God who does not shame his fear but meets it with presence. God does not provide all the answers to Joseph; instead, God offers reassurance. Do not be afraid. Love reaches Joseph before fear can close his heart. That love invites him into a quiet, courageous faithfulness.
Advent love does not remove uncertainty. It teaches us how to stay present in it. Joseph’s story reminds us that love often appears as a steady yes amid unanswered questions—a willingness to stay connected when retreating might seem safer.
Application:
Practice being present today. Choose to stay engaged in one relationship or situation where it might be easier to pull away.
Writing Prompt:
Where in your life is love encouraging you to stay present instead of pulling away?
Prayer:
With-us God,
when fear tempts us to withdraw,
teach us the courage of love that stays.
Help us trust your presence in uncertain moments.
Amen.
