Scripture: Luke 1:26–38 (NRSV)
Key Verse:
“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” (Luke 1:30)
Reflection:
Mary’s story doesn’t begin with confidence. It starts with disruption. An angel appears, her plans are disrupted, and naturally, fear rises. Before Mary can ask questions or explain herself, she is met with reassurance: “Do not be afraid.” Not because nothing will change—but because love is already there.
Fear often appears when the future feels uncertain. However, love does not wait for certainty. God’s love meets Mary exactly where she is—young, unprepared, and unsure. This love doesn’t eliminate the risk; it gives her the courage to stay present to the call unfolding before her.
Advent reminds us that love often enters our lives unexpectedly. It doesn’t eradicate fear but instead offers companionship. God’s love speaks before fear gets the last word.
Application & Reflection Prompt:
Where has fear been interfering with your ability to listen for love?
Write about a moment when love—God’s or someone else’s—met you in uncertainty.
Prayer:
Loving God,
when fear rises within us, remind us that your love has already arrived.
Help us trust your presence even when we don’t know what comes next.
Amen.
