Scripture: Matthew 11:5 (NRSV)
Key Verse: “…the poor have good news brought to them.”
Reflection
Joy is often seen as celebration—laughter, lights, warm gatherings. But in Scripture, joy often appears as justice. Jesus highlights the good news for the poor, the restoration of the vulnerable, and the inclusion of those who are excluded. Joy emerges wherever compassion heals what fear has broken.
This is a joy we take part in. Whenever we align ourselves with God’s healing work—feeding, visiting, welcoming, advocating—we help joy take root in the world. It’s less about emotion and more about relationship: showing up for one another in ways that restore dignity. This kind of joy doesn’t vanish when circumstances become painful; it deepens because it is rooted in love.
Advent calls us to pursue this joy: not just surface-level cheerfulness, but a way of life that mirrors God’s heart for those who have been silenced, overlooked, or dismissed. Joy deepens each time we choose to be present to someone else’s pain—and to their healing.
Application
Perform one act of compassion today—small, intentional, and rooted in love.
