Scripture: Psalm 27:1 (NRSV)
The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
Reflection
Fear is not a failure of faith—it’s a natural human response to uncertainty. Zechariah was afraid. Mary was troubled. Shepherds were terrified. Scripture doesn’t hide fear; it openly acknowledges it. Advent doesn’t shame fear; it recognizes it and points beyond it, inviting us to consider what might become possible when God’s presence begins to soften its power.
Psalm 27 reminds us that God’s light isn’t a spotlight demanding perfection. It’s more like a candle in a dark room—small but steady, enough to take a step. Even a single flame can challenge the shadows. Hope grows when we let that light speak louder than the fear that tries to shrink our imagination or paralyze our movement. Faith doesn’t eliminate fear; it reframes it.
The work of Advent isn’t about becoming fearless. It’s about allowing God’s gentle light to guide us through the fear we hold—one small step at a time. Fear might speak loudly, but it doesn’t get the final word. God’s presence, steady and tender, encourages us to move forward even with trembling hands.
Application (Action)
Say aloud one fear you’re holding onto today. Then quietly say: “Light of God, lead me one step at a time.”
