Scripture: Hebrews 11:1–3 (NRSV)
Reflection:
Faith is often portrayed as something neat—clear beliefs, confident answers, strong convictions. We sometimes hear faith described as knowing exactly what we believe and why, without hesitation or doubt. But the opening words of Hebrews provide a much more honest and realistic view. Faith, we’re told, is about trusting what we cannot fully see and stepping forward even when the picture is incomplete. It is less about certainty and more about direction, where we place our trust when clarity is still emerging.
For many of us, faith becomes most real not during moments of confidence, but in times of uncertainty. When life doesn’t go as planned, when prayers seem unanswered, and when the future appears unclear, that is often when faith is tested and reshaped. The people remembered in Hebrews were not praised for knowing how their stories would end. They were remembered for showing up, for trusting enough to take the next step, even when the road ahead was uncertain.
This is where our journey starts. A faith that shows up isn’t perfect or perfectly expressed. It’s a faith willing to be honest, open, and present. It trusts that God is already working, even when we can’t yet see how things will turn out. Today’s invitation isn’t to have faith all figured out, but to let it be real.
Practice:
As you go through today, notice moments where you feel tempted to wait for certainty before acting. Gently ask yourself what it might look like to take one small step forward anyway.
Journaling Prompt:
Where in my life does faith feel most real or most uncertain right now?
Prayer:
Faithful God,
You meet us not in our certainty, but in our willingness to trust.
Help us to begin this journey honestly—without pretending or pressure.
Teach us how to take the next step, even when the path ahead is unclear.
Amen.
