Scripture: Psalm 13:1–4 (NRSV)
Reflection:
Faith can feel heavy when expectations clash with reality. We’re often taught, sometimes subtly, sometimes explicitly, that faith should bring clarity, peace, and confidence. When life becomes complicated or painful, it can seem like we’re doing faith “wrong.” Questions come up. Doubt sneaks in. And the burden of trying to believe the right things can become draining.
The psalms remind us that this tension is not a failure of faith — it is a part of it. Psalm 13 does not rush toward resolution or simple answers. Instead, it voices frustration, grief, and longing. “How long?” is not a sign of lack of trust; it is trust that dares to speak honestly. Scripture allows faith to wrestle, wait, and wonder.
A faith that shows up does not deny the heaviness we carry. It allows us to bring our weariness, disappointment, and uncertainty into God’s presence without pretending everything is fine. Faith doesn’t require us to be strong all the time. Sometimes, showing up just means being honest about how heavy things feel.
Practice:
Take a few moments today to name out loud or silently what feels heavy in your faith right now. Honestly offer it to God without trying to fix or explain it.
Journaling Prompt:
What faith-related expectations have felt burdensome for me?
Prayer:
God of truth,
You call us to honesty, not performance.
Support us when faith feels heavy,
and remind us that even our questions are acts of trust.
Amen.
