Scripture: Proverbs 16:9 (NRSV)
Reflection:
One of the quiet invitations of the star-word practice is learning how to receive instead of control. We do not choose the word that feels safest or most familiar. We do not edit it for comfort or clarity. We simply receive it. That act alone can feel unsettling in a world that teaches us to curate nearly everything.
However, faith often develops through unexpected events. God’s guidance isn’t always clear or certain but depends on trust — trust that understanding can come with time. A word may not make sense now, but it might resonate in surprising ways later.
Even without a star-word, this invitation remains. Where in your life are you being asked to receive rather than decide? Where might God be shaping you through what you did not choose but are learning to carry?
Practice:
Notice one moment today when you feel the urge to control the outcome. Practice letting go of it, even if only for a moment.
Writing Prompt:
What emotions or thoughts arise in me when I receive something instead of choosing it?
Prayer:
Faithful God,
when I seek certainty,
teach me to trust.
When I desire control,
teach me to be open.
Help me believe that you are at work,
even in what I did not choose.
Amen.
