Scripture Reference: Luke 4:16–21
Key Verse: “Then he began to say to them, ‘Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’” (Luke 4:21, NRSVUE)
Reflection:
Almost every household keeps a someday list. Someday we will clean out the basement. Someday we will call the cousin we lost touch with. Someday we will volunteer, take that class, or finally visit the neighbor who has been alone since her husband died. The list is full of good intentions, and every item on it has one thing in common. None of them is on the calendar.
The people of Nazareth had a someday list too, and theirs was centuries old. For generations, they had prayed for the year of the Lord’s favor, when the poor would hear good news and captives would go free. They read Isaiah’s promise in the synagogue and kept it carefully, the way you keep a promise you expect to come true after you are gone. Then the young man they had watched grow up stood to read it, rolled up the scroll, and sat down. With every eye on him, he spoke one word that moved the promise off the someday list: “Today.”
The God who heard the cries of enslaved people in Egypt is still listening. Now, in Jesus, that same liberating love is taking on flesh. Jesus announces that God’s liberation has arrived among those who know him by name. Over the chapters that follow, Luke shows us what that ‘today’ looks like. Jesus touches people with leprosy, eats with outsiders, heals on the Sabbath, and lifts up those everyone else has written off. In Luke’s telling, the good news has hands and feet, and it keeps showing up at dinner tables and along roadsides.
It is easy for faith to drift onto the someday list. We assume God’s freedom belongs to the future, to heaven, or to some later season when we have more time. Jesus’ word in Nazareth pulls it back into the present. God’s liberating love is already at work, confronting injustice, restoring dignity, and opening possibilities for new life. Somewhere in your week, there may be an opportunity to participate in that work. ‘Fulfilled in your hearing’ reminds us that God’s promises are not merely words to admire. They are invitations to join what God is doing today.
Writing Prompt:
What item on your someday list might be an invitation from God for today? What is keeping it on the list?
Application:
Pick one item from your someday list that would bring relief or good news to someone else, such as a visit, a phone call, or a meal. Do it before the end of the day.
Prayer:
Jesus, you stood in your hometown and said, “Today.” Forgive me for the ways I delay responding to your invitation. Open my eyes to the people you are setting free right now, and give me the courage to join you before the moment passes. Amen.
