Scripture: Luke 7:36–50 (NRSV)
Key Verse (Luke 7:44):
“Do you see this woman?”
Reflection:
“Do you see this woman?” Jesus’ question to Simon is not rhetorical; it is diagnostic. Simon perceives her reputation, while Jesus perceives her tears. Simon recognizes disruption, but Jesus sees love awakened. The question remains with us this Lent: What are we trained to see? The woman’s encounter with grace shifts her perception. Forgiveness doesn’t just change her heart; it alters how everyone in the room perceives her. She sees Jesus clearly because she has allowed herself to be seen clearly.
At the start of the year, you received a Star Word. You didn’t choose it; it was given to you. That matters. Like forgiveness, it arrives beyond your control. Some words felt comforting; others felt inconvenient. Over time, many of us tame our word, shaping it into something manageable. But what if your Star Word is less about aspiration and more about awakening? What if it names the place where grace is meant to meet you vulnerably this year?
Communally, Star Words oppose consumer spirituality. We are used to choosing what fits our preferences. Yet love awakened through grace often confronts us when we are least prepared. The woman in Luke 7 did not plan the moment. She responded. Simon tried to control the story. He analyzed instead of truly encountering. If your Star Word unsettles you, it may be because it presses into a place where forgiveness still needs to be received—and where love still needs to be born.
Personally, reflect on your word in light of this week’s movement. If your word is “courage,” where are you avoiding vulnerability? If it is “mercy,” where have you withheld forgiveness? If it is “presence,” where are you choosing distance? The Star Word is not superstition. It is an invitation. Like Jesus’ question, “Do you see?” it asks whether we are willing to be met honestly. Love for God and neighbor is not created by effort. It will awaken where grace touches the place your word names.
Application:
Place your Star Word somewhere you’ll see it every day this week (mirror, dashboard, desk), and act on it during a specific relationship encounter before Sunday.
Writing Prompt:
How have you quietly transformed your Star Word into something safer than what it might actually need to become?
Prayer:
God, who gives what we do not choose, meet us again through the word we carry. Awaken love where we resist being seen. Amen.
