Scripture: Ephesians 4:11–16 (NRSV)
Key Verse: “We must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.” Ephesians 4:15)
Reflection:
Paul’s vision of the church is not static. It is dynamic, relational, and deeply communal. Growth is not optional. It is the very purpose of the body. The gifts named are not for individual fulfillment. They exist to equip the community for transformation. The movement is toward maturity, toward becoming more fully aligned with Christ.
This is where the language of formation becomes unavoidable. We are not called to remain where we are. We are called to grow into Christ, and that growth is not solitary. It happens in relationship, through truth-telling, through shared life. It requires vulnerability and accountability. It requires a willingness to be shaped by others and by God.
This is where the practice of the Star Word becomes more than symbolic and interrupts the illusion of control. It invites you to pay attention to what you would not have selected for yourself. In a culture that prizes self-determination, receiving a word is an act of surrender. It opens you to formation rather than preference.
Formation comes through what we receive, not what we would design. This is precisely why it forms us rather than merely confirming us. Your Star Word is not a label. It is a lens. It is a way of noticing where God is already at work in your life.
We often reduce formation to programs or seasonal practices that are disconnected from lived experience, allowing Star Words to become sentimental tokens. We move on too quickly, failing to revisit what was given, treating formation as a moment rather than the process it actually is. But growth requires sustained attention. It requires returning to what we have received and allowing it to deepen over time. The question is not whether your word “fits.” The question is what it reveals.
Your word is inviting you to become someone.
Application:
Revisit your Star Word today. Write it down, carry it with you, and intentionally look for one moment where it intersects with your real life.
Writing Prompt:
How has your Star Word challenged or disrupted your assumptions about yourself?
Prayer:
God who forms us, help us receive what we would not choose. Shape us through what you give, and lead us into deeper growth. Amen.
