Scripture (NRSV): Deuteronomy 30:19
“Choose life so that you and your descendants may live.”
Reflection:
“Choose life.” The command is straightforward. The implications are complex.
Every day, we make choices that move us toward life or away from it. Sometimes the choice is clear — whether to forgive or retaliate, to speak truth or stay silent. Other times, the drift is subtle — choosing distraction over presence, cynicism over hope, self-protection over compassion.
Choosing life doesn’t mean choosing comfort. In fact, it often takes courage. Today, choosing life might mean resisting the algorithm that fuels our outrage. It might mean refusing to weaponize information about someone we disagree with. It might mean staying connected to family members whose politics frighten us — not by compromising truth, but by choosing curiosity over contempt.
Choosing life means asking: Does this conversation promote understanding or create division? Does this social media post reflect Christ’s character or just my need to be right? Am I choosing what strengthens community or what affirms my tribe?
Life-giving decisions can cost us—socially, emotionally, or even financially. Choosing generosity in a culture of scarcity requires trust. Opting for inclusion amid division takes bravery. Showing compassion when fear feels safer takes faith.
And yet, our choices ripple outward. They influence not only our character but also the community surrounding us. Foundations are never purely personal. The way we build impacts others.
A faith worth practicing rejects passivity. It does not wait for circumstances to come together. It chooses — again and again — to align with grace, justice, and love, even when the journey is difficult.
