Scripture Reference: Genesis 12:4–5
Key Verse: “So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.” (Genesis 12:4, NRSVUE)
Reflection:
Abram’s response to God’s call is three words: “So Abram went.” There is no speech, no list of conditions, no negotiation over details. At seventy-five, he packs up Sarai, his nephew Lot, and everything the household owns, then steps onto a road he has never traveled. The Bible spends far more time on what God promised than on how Abram felt about it. What it records is that he went.
Abram did not go alone, and that detail matters to us. “Lot went with him.” Sarai went with him. A whole household moved together. None of them knew exactly where they were headed, but they knew they were headed there together. God’s call to Abram was always bigger than one man’s spiritual life. It was the beginning of a people, and a people moves together. God’s call still lands on a community, and we answer it side by side.
So here we are this week. Tomorrow we gather again for worship. Some of us will come tired, some grieving, and some simply out of habit, and all of that is welcome. We can also come carrying something new: the knowledge that our gathering exists for more than meeting our own needs. We are a people called so that blessing can reach beyond us. That changes the question we bring through the doors. We can walk in asking what God wants to do through us for the neighbors God has placed around us.
The road ahead is not fully mapped, and it never was. Abram never received a map either. What he had was a voice he trusted and people walking beside him, and that was enough to begin. Tomorrow, when you walk into worship, look around at the people traveling this road with you. They are your companions for the journey. Then, together, go.
Writing Prompt:
Who is walking this road of faith alongside you? How might you go together into the week ahead?
Application:
Before tomorrow’s worship, contact one person from your church and tell them about the place where you prayed this week or where you sensed God at work. Ask them to share theirs.
Prayer:
Calling God, you spoke, and Abram went. You are still speaking to your people. Thank you for those who travel with me. Make us a people who go together, carrying your blessing to every family you love. Amen.
