Scripture: James 2:1–4 (NRSV)
"My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your assembly... and you take notice... have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?"
Reflection:
James doesn't mince words—partiality has no place in the church. It’s easy to welcome those who look, talk, and think like us, but true Christian welcome doesn’t play favorites. It doesn’t ask, “Do you fit in?” It asks, “How can I make space for you?” Every person is made in God's image. We honor Christ not through surface-level gestures but through a posture of love that sees dignity in everyone.
Application (Action):
Invite someone into a space where decisions are made. Ask for their input or perspective—especially if they’re not usually asked.
Writing Prompt:
Are there people you tend to avoid or judge—consciously or unconsciously? What would it look like to practice welcome with them?
Prayer:
God of all people, forgive me when I make assumptions or show favoritism. Teach me to see your image in everyone I meet. Let my welcome be wide enough for those who have been pushed aside. Amen.
