Scripture: 1 John 4:18-19 (NRSV)
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. We love because he first loved us.”
Reflection:
This verse does not promise that fear will disappear. It promises that love becomes stronger. Fear will always have a voice—but it does not have to have the final say. Fear urges us to protect ourselves, to withdraw, to harden. Love calls us to risk connection anyway.
Especially in times of violence and division, choosing love is not naïve—it is brave. It means refusing to let fear dictate who we see as our neighbor. It means resisting the stories that teach us to view entire communities as threats. It means staying engaged even when cynicism feels safer, staying loving when hardness seems protective, staying hopeful even when despair seems justified. This isn’t about pretending fear isn’t real. It’s about not letting fear define the story of our faith.
As this week ends, the message is not guilt—but clarity. You have spent these days reflecting on what it means for faith to have a cost. You have practiced noticing where you pass by, where compassion interrupts, where justice calls. Now the question is: What will you carry forward? Not what huge transformation you’ll accomplish, but what small, faithful practice you will return to when the road gets tough again.
Faith that costs us something isn’t about proving devotion. It’s about trusting that love is worth the risk, that grace is strong enough to support us. That showing up still matters, even when we can’t see the result. Love doesn’t promise easy answers, but it promises we’re not alone.
Practice:
Notice when fear influences your decisions today. Without judgment, ask what love could look like in that same moment.
Journaling Prompt:
Where do you feel torn between fear and love right now? Which choice feels most faithful?
Prayer:
God of love,
hold us when fear feels overwhelming.
Anchor us in courage rooted in grace.
Teach us to live as if love is stronger.
Amen.
