Scripture:
Genesis 1:1–5 (NRSV)
Key Verse:
“Then God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” — Genesis 1:3
Reflection:
The Bible’s opening words do not depict a neat, orderly world. Instead, they portray chaos, darkness, and formless waters. It is precisely in that chaos—before anything is settled—that God speaks light into existence.
That matters to us, especially now. Many of us carry unfinished stories, unresolved questions, and lingering uncertainty. Christmas doesn’t pretend those things aren’t there. Instead, it proclaims that God’s creative Spirit is still present, still speaking, still bringing light into places that feel unsettled.
God does not wait for clarity before drawing near. Light is spoken into the mess—not as a quick fix, but as a promise that chaos will not have the final word.
Application (Practice):
Choose a small part of your day where you will resist fixing or controlling—letting things remain unfinished without rushing to finish them.
Writing Prompt:
What feels unfinished or unsettled in your life right now? As you write, resist the urge to solve it. Instead, describe how it feels to imagine God’s light hovering there without judgment or urgency.
Prayer:
Creator God,
speak light into what feels unclear or unsettled.
Help us trust that you are still at work.
Amen.
