Scripture: Matthew 11:7–9 (NRSV)
Key Verse: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at?”
Reflection
Jesus doesn’t dismiss John’s questions; he honors them. He turns to the crowd and speaks with deep respect for John’s faithfulness. Even in doubt, John is seen, valued, and trusted. This is a profound source of joy: knowing that our questions do not disqualify us from God’s love or participation in God’s work.
Many of us grow up believing that strong faith leaves no room for doubt. But the Advent story reveals a different truth. Joy allows room for doubt because it is rooted in relationship, not certainty. We can be our authentic selves—our confusion, frustrations, and fear of “getting it wrong”—and God meets us with tenderness.
When we stop fearing our questions, we create space for a deeper connection with God. Joy increases when we see that God does not require polished faith—only an honest heart willing to seek, knock, and listen.
