Scripture:
Luke 2:8–16 (NRSV)
Key Verse:
“I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people.” — Luke 2:10
Reflection:
The first Christmas announcement isn’t made in a palace or temple but out in a field. Shepherds—workers on the margins, awake while others sleep—are the first to hear the good news. Joy reaches them not because of their status, but because God’s love refuses to be contained.
This is still how God works. Joy often shows up in unexpected places, among people who never thought they would be included. Christmas expands our understanding of who belongs—and reminds us that God’s grace is always broader than we expect.
As Epiphany draws near, we are encouraged to remain aware of where joy continues to emerge.
Application (Practice):
Offer your full attention to someone today—without multitasking, interrupting, or rushing—honoring their presence as a bearer of God’s joy.
Writing Prompt:
Who has helped you experience joy this year—perhaps unexpectedly or quietly? Write a few sentences expressing gratitude for the ways others have brought joy into your life.
Prayer:
God of great joy,
open our eyes to your love at work in unexpected places.
Amen.
