Scripture: Isaiah 43:20–21 (NRSV)
Key Verse: “The people whom I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise.”
Reflection
God’s promise in Isaiah isn’t based on the people’s mood, their morale, or their circumstances. The wilderness still surrounds them. The hardships are still real. But God reminds them who they are: a people created to witness to life, liberation, and praise. Their identity isn’t defined by their discouragement but by the One who claims them.
Advent joy is closely connected to identity. It comes from knowing that God’s presence isn’t dependent on circumstances. Even when we feel lost, tired, or overwhelmed, God takes delight in us and keeps shaping us toward goodness. Joy, then, is less about how things are going and more about who God is—and who we are becoming through God’s love.
When we remember that we belong to a God who brings life out of impossible places, joy becomes more steady. It settles in our bones, even if our emotions haven’t caught up yet. It becomes a practice of remembering: We are God’s beloved, and God is not finished with us.
Application
Speak one truth aloud about who you are in God: “I am beloved… I am held… I am being made new.”
