Scripture: Acts 2:47 (NRSV)
And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
Reflection:
The story of the early church ends this week not by turning inward, but by expanding outward. As shared life grew deeper, the circle did not close; it opened wider. Growth occurred not because the community protected itself, but because love was visible, practiced, and generous.
That kind of openness can feel risky. Making room for new people, new questions, and new perspectives often stirs fear beneath the surface. Fear of change. Fear of loss. Fear that expanding the circle will somehow weaken what’s already there. So we learn to guard what feels familiar, even when our faith tells us otherwise.
But Acts presents a different view of imagination. Growth isn’t something the community creates or controls; it’s something God does as love develops among people who stay open. Faith that shows up does not cling tightly to comfort or certainty. It trusts there’s enough room for grace, for becoming, for people still finding their way.
This kind of faith resists shrinking when faced with uncertainty. It remains open and receptive. Curious. Hospitable. It believes that God is still gathering and forming community through simple acts of welcome and shared life. It also understands that expanding the circle isn’t just about numbers; it’s about making belonging visible.
As this week ends, the invitation is not to do more, but to stay open. To trust that faith built in community will keep growing as love continues to make space.
Practice:
Notice today when you feel tempted to close off emotionally, relationally, or spiritually. Gently ask yourself what it might mean to stay open instead.
Journaling Prompt:
What fears arise for you regarding openness or change? Where could God be calling your faith to expand instead of defend?
Prayer:
God of expanding grace, you are always doing more than we can see. Free us from fear that isolates us and teach us to trust love that makes room. Keep shaping our faith into something open, generous, and alive. Amen.
