Scripture Reference: Genesis 12:1–3
Key Verse: “I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.” (Genesis 12:2, NRSVUE)
Reflection:
In many families, there is a casserole dish that never seems to stay home. It goes out full to a neighbor recovering from surgery, comes back washed a week later, and then goes out again to a family with a new baby or a house full of grieving relatives. The dish belongs to someone, but it spends most of its life traveling. Its sole purpose is to carry something good to someone else.
God’s promise to Abram works much like that dish. Listen to how it grows. God begins with Abram himself: a great nation, a blessing, a great name. Then the promise expands outward with seven small words, “so that you will be a blessing.” By the end of verse three, it has reached “all the families of the earth.” The blessing given to Abram was always meant to keep moving.
This changes what it means to be chosen. The word carries a painful history. People have used it to draw lines between insiders and outsiders and to claim that God loves some people more than others. Genesis closes that door at the very beginning of the story. Abram is chosen for the sake of everyone else. His election is a purposeful calling, and that purpose points away from himself.
The same is true for us. Think of the people who loved you into faith, the comfort that met you in a season of grief, and the community that showed up when you needed it most. Each of those blessings came to you on its way somewhere. You are part of the route. Sometimes a blessing only needs to travel across the street. Sometimes it travels farther than we will ever see. The question this text poses to us is simple: where is the blessing you have received supposed to go next?
Writing Prompt:
Name one blessing you have received from another person. Where might that blessing be meant to go next?
Application:
Pass something along this week. Bring a meal, a card, or an hour of your time to someone carrying a heavy load, and do it without expecting anything in return.
Prayer:
Generous God, you have blessed me through so many hands. Keep me from holding your gifts too tightly. Make my life a road your blessings can travel, all the way to people I may never meet. Amen.
